What you need to know about Sytron

Please read this leaflet carefully before you start to take this medicine or give this medicine to a child. This leaflet only provides a summary of the important information about this product. If you have any questions or are not sure about anything to do with your treatment please ask your doctor or pharmacist.

What is in your medicine?

Your medicine is called Sytron. It is a red, sugar free, cherry-flavoured liquid which comes in 500ml bottles. Each 5ml spoonful of Sytron contains 190mg of sodium feredetate (the active ingredient) which is equivalent to 27.5mg of iron. It also contains the inactive ingredients methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl hydro ybenzoate (E216), citric acid monohydrate, saccharin sodium, glycerol, sorbitol, ethanol, ponceau 4R (E124), black cherry flavouring and water.

Sytron is used to treat anaemia caused by too little iron in the body (iron-deficiency anaemia). The form of iron used in this product means that it is not astringent to take (less likely to cause stomach upsets than other iron-containing medicines) and will not discolour teeth. It is used to treat children and people who have become anaemic as a result of having rheumatoid arthritis. Sytron can be taken during pregnancy.

Taking your medicine

Follow any instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. The usual doses are as follows:

Adults: one 5ml spoonful increasing gradually to two 5ml spoonfuls three times a day.

Elderly: (over 65 years old): as for adults.

Children:

6 to 12 years of age: one 5ml spoonful three times a day.

1 to 5 years of age: half a 5ml spoonful (2.5ml) three times a day.

Infants:

up to 1 year of age (including premature infants):

half a 5ml spoonful (2.5ml) twice a day. Smaller doses should be used at the start of treatment.

You may be given a syringe instead of a spoon. It can be easier to give the right dose to a baby or small child with a syringe. Ask your pharmacist how to use it and make sure you wash it out well after each dose.

If you forget to take a dose do not worry, take the next dose at the usual time. DO NOT take a double dose.

What to do in case of an overdose (too much is taken)

If you accidentally take too much Sytron tell your doctor at once or contact your nearest hospital casualty department.

Remember to take the following to show the doctor:

  • this leaflet and the container.

  • any remaining Sytron.

If an overdose has been taken you may feel sick or be sick. This may have some blood in it. You may have stomach pains, diarrhoea, notice bleeding from your rectum, feel very tired and experience circulatory collapse (failure of your circulation to work), where your skin may feel cold and sweaty and your heart may start to beat faster. Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and metabolic acidosis (high blood acidity) may also occur.

While taking your medicine

You may feel sick or have mild diarrhoea in the early stages of treatment. These effects should quickly disappear if you stop taking Sytron for a short time. When treatment is restarted, a lower dose of your medicine should be taken. If your doctor tells you to take Sytron at doses higher than is stated in this leaflet you may experience mild diarrhoea.

If your medicine upsets you in any other way, tell your doctor.

Store Sytron in a safe place where children cannot reach it. If the product shows any signs of deterioration please return it to your pharmacist.

Do not use this product after the expiry date indicated on the label. Once opened the product should be used within 3 months. There is a space on the label to record the date opened.

Always keep Sytron in its original packaging, along with this leaflet so that you can read it again if necessary.

Sytron has been prescribed only for you or your child. Never give it to someone else. It may harm them even if their symptoms are similar to yours.
